Spring Speaker Series: Racial Inequities in Homeownership in the US and Support for Reparations in Michigan

During our spring speaker series, presenters will discuss racial inequities in access to homeownership nationwide and support for reparations in Michigan communities.


Dr. Helen Meier is an Assistant Research Scientist at the Institute for Social Research. Her work examines the structural, social, and environmental determinants of health and health inequities across the life course. Dr. Meier will introduce a new dataset that can facilitate studies of mortgage lending discrimination. Jasmine Simington is a joint doctoral candidate in Sociology and Public Policy. Her research explores racial and spatial inequalities in housing. Jasmine will discuss a resurgence in calls for reparations to Black Americans. She will share survey results examining attitudes towards reparations in Detroit, Flint, and Ypsilanti.


Dr. Mara Cecilia Ostfeld, Research Director at the Center for Racial Justice and Associate Professor at Ford School of Public Policy, will moderate the discussion.
